Punkasila-BJ-3

PUNKASILA is an artist collective formed by Danius Kesminas during his artist-in-residence at Yayasan Seni Cemeti (Indonesian Visual Art Archive) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The name, PUNKASILA, which literally means punk principles, derives from Pancasila, the five tenets devised for the unitary basis of Indonesian nationhood. This collective interested into open collaboration and cross-disciplinary work especially music and visual art.

The first project, “Acronym Wars” was started while Kesminas reading “The Politics of Indonesia” by Dr Damien Kingsbury. He found himself continually referring to the index of abbreviations and acronyms and it is this index that he chose as the basis for PUNKASILA’s “lyrics”. These acronyms became a set of abbreviated “songs” performed in a frenetic progressive-punk-rock idiom. The song titles are in fact the complete lyrics (with completed nomenclature echoed in Bahasa Indonesian).  This project produce music, hand-custom-made guitars, batik-based military uniform, comic books, hand-painted banners and merchandises. PUNKASILA’S first CD, “Acronym Wars” released in conjunction with the 2007 Yogyakarta & Sydney exhibitions/performances.

In 2012, PUNKASILA writing and recorded their new album only in 2 days. This album “Crash Nation” telling the stories of disasters and its relation to the traditional myths and syncretism based on the events in Indonesia.

The third project “The Lepidopters” was made in 2014 in collaboration with SLAVE PIANOS —a Melbourne based collective, American writer Mark von Schlegel, avantgarde pianist Michael Kieran Harvey, gamelan group Sekar Jindra and many other artists from Indonesia and Australia.

In 2015 PUNKASILA create a new project “Rough Machine/Soft Power” for the Biennale Jogja XIII. This work is inspired by the chaotic-motorbike parade of political parties and football supporters in Yogyakarta.

To date PUNKASILA have played live shows in Semarang, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Melborune, Brisbane and Darwin. PUNKASILA also performed at the 10th Biennale of Havana, Cuba in 2009.
